Dr. Jürgen Brautmeier (born in 1954 in Westphalia) studied History and English in Düsseldorf and Cambridge. He is married and father of two daughters.
In March 2010, he was elected as Director of the Media Authority of North Rhine-Westfalia (LfM). For the years 2013-15, he was also chairman of the Director's Conference of the German Media Authorities.
In the early nineties, Jürgen Brautmeier regularly visited various countries in Central and Eastern Europe on behalf of the Council of Europe as an independent adviser on broadcasting legislation. He also lectured at Duesseldorf University, the Lomonossow University in Moscow and at the University of St. Petersburg. In 1995, he was one of the founding members of the European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA) and was a board member of this organization until Mai 2013. Since 2006, Dr. Brautmeier is also Vice President of the Media Council of the German-speaking community in Belgium.
As an historian, since completing his doctorate on Research Policy in North Rhine-Westphalia after WW II, he has published various articles on regional history but also on the First and the Second World War and on emigration to America in the 19th century. Moreover, Dr. Brautmeier is one of the publishers of the "Düsseldorfer Schriften zur Neueren Landesgeschichte und zur Geschichte Nordrhein-Westfalens" (Düsseldorf Papers on Contemporary Regional History and the History of North Rhine-Westphalia). Since 2012, he is also a member of the University Council of the University of Paderborn.
